Dear WashU undergraduates,

As Chancellor Martin shared in the State of the University address, WashU is preparing students not just to use AI but to think like a leader in a world shaped by AI. We also acknowledge that AI can both transform and complicate your academic, professional, and personal life. As with all aspects of your education, our role is not to answer questions for you but to instead support you in answering important questions for yourself. We want to elevate the resources below to support the thoughtful, responsible, and appropriate use of generative AI tools.

AI Literacy for the WashU Scholar Canvas module: Build AI literacyStudents are encouraged to enroll in the AI Literacy for the WashU Scholar Canvas module. This short, 30-minute module introduces how generative AI works, how to evaluate AI outputs, and how to apply these tools responsibly in academic contexts. Faculty may assign the module in courses, and all undergraduates may self-enroll.

ChatGPT Edu: Students who successfully complete the AI Literacy module will receive free access to ChatGPT Edu

Students who successfully complete the AI Literacy module will receive free access to ChatGPT Edu in March. ChatGPT Edu provides access to OpenAI’s flagship models, with advanced capabilities in text interpretation, coding, mathematics, data analysis, web browsing, and document summarization. It also includes enhanced privacy protections: your prompts are not used to train the model and WashU does not have access to read them.

Gemini for Education: A free, privacy-protected AI tool available now

WashU Danforth Campus students have free access to Gemini for Education, a university supported generative AI platform designed specifically for educational settings. Unlike consumer AI tools, Gemini for Education protects student privacy and does not use data to train AI models. Information on access, along with other supported tools such as NotebookLM, is available at ai.washu.edu.

We wish you continued success as the spring semester continues.
