Under the leadership of Provost Mark D. West, WashU’s vice provosts plan, lead and implement key academic initiatives across the university.

All Vice Provosts are part of University Council (UC), the senior leadership of WashU, providing strategic and operational guidance to the chancellor and UC colleagues on challenges and opportunities related to the mission of the university. The vice provosts work with school deans and vice deans to administer the academic program and coordinate functions of WashU to support this mission.

The vice provost for undergraduate education works to enhance equity in undergraduates’ academic opportunities, experiences, and outcomes; deepening student research experiences; assess educational programs; and foster innovation in educational programs and practices.

Vice Provost for Academic Excellence

The vice provost for academic excellence (VPAE) leads faculty affairs and development on the Danforth Campus. In this role, Amy Eyler strives for both institutional excellence and faculty well-being. She also coordinates with the other vice provosts and academic leaders on shared initiatives and supports other university-wide efforts.

Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Initiatives

The vice provost for interdisciplinary initiatives (VPII) works to boost cross-school collaborations, leading efforts to advance interdisciplinary research and scholarship at WashU. The VPII’s work involves the creation of opportunities to incentivize interdisciplinary research; helping shepherd the hiring of faculty whose scholarship and science are at the interstices of traditional disciplines; creating pathways that encourage students and early-career scholars to engage in interdisciplinary work; and fostering a climate and culture that encourage and reward interdisciplinarity.

Vice Provost for Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Nathan Jacobs serves as vice provost for artificial intelligence, co-leading WashU’s +AI Initiative and serving as faculty co-lead of the Digital Intelligence and Innovation Accelerator (DI2). In this role, he helps shape the university’s strategy for advancing AI-enabled research, developing shared AI infrastructure, and fostering partnerships that accelerate innovation across academia and industry. He remains an active researcher, developing AI methods for scientific discovery through computer vision and geospatial AI.

Vijay K. Ramani, Senior Vice Provost for Graduate Education and International Affairs; Roma B. & Raymond H. Wittcoff Distinguished University Professor, McKelvey School of Engineering

Senior Vice Provost for Graduate Education and International Affairs

The senior vice provost for graduate education and international affairs oversees WashU’s graduate student community of approximately 7,500 graduate and professional students at its nine schools. Vijay serves as a key member of the provost’s core leadership team, advises the provost on graduate education trends, programming, strategic planning and policy, and works closely with school deans and vice deans to advance graduate and professional education across WashU.  Vijay is responsible for administering several University-wide fellowships and overseeing The Graduate Center.

Vijay supports international research and education across all schools and facilitates global partnerships and programs. He serves as executive director of the McDonnell International Scholars Academy, and leads efforts to recruit students and scholars from around the globe to pursue graduate and professional degrees at WashU. He is responsible for the university’s international advancement and fund-raising functions.

Vice Provost for Innovation

Betsy Sinclair serves as vice provost for innovation, co-leading WashU’s +AI Initiative and co-directing the Digital Intelligence and Innovation Accelerator (DI2). In this work she supports the university’s effort to harness AI as an accelerant for research, teaching, and impact across the region. Her portfolio includes supporting faculty, establishing shared research infrastructure, governance, and curricular transformation. She remains an active scholar of computational social science and of the use of AI in democratic institutions.

As vice provost and university librarian, Mimi Calter oversees WashU Libraries and its staff of expert librarians, curators, and archivists. She is charged with strengthening print and digital collections, developing programming to support research, teaching, and learning, and collaborating with scholars on and off campus.

Vice Provost of Enrollment Management

As vice provost of enrollment management, Ronné Turner is responsible for planning and directing the recruitment of undergraduate students to WashU and for implementing strategies to increase the strength and diversity of the student body. She also oversees Student Financial Services, which is dedicated to making it financially possible for admitted students to enroll and for enrolled students to graduate.
