WashU Instructors are critical to students’ academic environment and experience. Instructors should review and be familiar with the resources below to ensure they are prepared to navigate their administrative responsibilities and support students in their academic journeys.
WashU has set Reading Days for undergraduate students. This policy explains the types of activities that may or may not be held during these periods. Final assessments should be held during the exam period not the final day of classes.
Includes recommendations for including AI in your classroom, examples for communicating your expectations in the classroom, guidance for identifying potential instances of academic dishonesty related to AI, and more.
When planning your course, you may be interested in identifying religious holidays or obligations that may post potential conflicts for observant students. Students may request accommodations via the Religious Holiday Class Absence Policy.
Students may request accommodations in order to observe a religious holiday. Instructors should inform students how they would like to receive requests for accommodations. Students must make their request before the end of the third week of class.
Students called to military service may need to take a leave of absence. This policy outlines the steps associated with this type of leave and the instructor obligations. For more information on Military & Veteran Services Polices, visit https://veterans.washu.edu/policies/
Faculty have a responsibility to ensure their courses are accessible for disabled students. When disabled students may require accommodations in their courses, Instructors will receive a DR WashU Accommodation Letter from students to verify their DR-approved accommodations.
WashU recognizes that many students prefer to use names other than their legal ones to identify themselves. In addition, in order to affirm each person’s gender identity and lived experiences, it is important that we ask and check in with others about pronouns. Any student may choose to identify a preferred first name in addition to their official name of record. Students can add or change their preferred name in Workday.
The CTL aims to support instructors in many ways. Sign up for their newsletter to receive information about workshops, classroom services, educational technology, support with teaching, and more.
Credit should be awarded based on these minimum established thresholds. A refreshed policy is anticipated for 2026-27.
Beyond these policies and resources, instructors may encounter situations with students in which a partner office or resource may be appropriate for consultation or referral. It is highly recommended that instructors include a link to Resources to Support Students in the Classroom, which provides links and descriptions of services.
